According to an exclusive from Deadline, Sony has approved a Men in Black spin-off that will be fast tracked in an attempt to hit a release date of May 17, 2019. The film will reportedly be written by Matt Holloway and Art Marcum, who previously penned both Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight.

Neither Tommy Lee Jones nor Will Smith are expected to return in their past roles, but the movie is said to "acknowledge and build upon the world they inhabited." As Deadline puts it, think of it as Jurassic World, but for the MiB universe. The unnamed movie does not have a director, but it will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg.

This is not the Men in Black/21 Jump Street mash-up that you may have heard about. That idea is still in development, but this one will come first.

The new film was confirmed by producer Walter F. Parkes, who said, "It’s so rare to get to the end of the script and know you’re holding a movie in your hands, but Art and Matt have written a spinoff that somehow is true to the core of the MiB world and yet expands the franchise to a fresh new place." Get your black glasses ready.
