Lil Rel Howery is re-teaming with Lakeith Stanfield and Issa Rae in the upcoming romance The Photograph, and appeared on Complex's Watch Less podcast, where he discussed the trio's first collaboration.
Howery, Stanfield, and Rae all appeared in JAY-Z's "Moonlight" video, which recreated a famous Friends episode. Jerrod Carmichael, Tiffany Haddish, Tessa Thompson, and Hannibal Buress also starred. Around the pod's 36-minute mark, Howery revealed that there could have been a version of the "Moonlight" video that would have been funnier than the one fans got to see. "There was one rehearsal where we all talked like how we wanted to talk," Rel said. "And it was funnier than that episode of Friends." But according to Howery, that version was "just a rehearsal."
From there, the conversation turned to Howery's close friendship and working relationship with Carmichael. When asked what Carmichael is up to now, Howery explained that he's got a lot of irons in the fire, and spends quite a bit of time hanging out with the likes of Kanye and JAY-Z. "He's a guy that all these dudes love," he said, adding that Chamrichael is the one they call and ask to listen to their songs. In fact, Howery believes that their mutual affinity for Carmichael helped JAY-Z and Kanye mend their friendship.
"I think JAY and Kanye talking now because of him," Rel said at the episode's 39-minute mark. "That's what I believe." Howery explained that he "thought it was weird" because "he would like talk to both of them." Naturally, Howery wondered if he ever asked them to talk to each other because "they talking to you!"
