America’s Top Fears: Corrupt Government, Data Privacy According to Survey

Americans' biggest fears go way beyond fear of sharks and fear of heights.

Chapman University surveyed Americans to figure out the country’s top fears. The survey asked 1,541 adults to rate 88 different fears spanning the realms of government, crime, natural disasters and more—or “domains of fear” (explained above) as the survey called them—on a scale of 1 (not afraid) to 4 (very afraid). Commonly heard of fears like fear of public speaking and clowns (and Obamacare?), made the list but the survey concluded Americans are more scared about things like gun control, which isn't surprising given how a recent poll indicated 40 percent of Americans know someone killed by gun violence, and by personal data breaches​. It's been a big year for hacking scandals after all.
