Jim Carrey is set to star in Paramount’s forthcoming adaptation of popular Segavideo game Sonic the Hedgehog as the villain Robotnik, according to Deadline. In the film, Sonic’s mission is to prevent Dr. Eggman/Robotnik from attaining world domination.
Sonic the Hedgehog has been a fan favorite for decades since its debut on Sega consoles in the '90s. Altogether, the series has sold more than 80 million physical copies of its games, and more than 350 million units of software and mobile downloads. Sonic has also birthed five television shows.
Carrey’s most recent roles were in Dark Crimes and Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond. Additionally, he has been executive producing the Showtime series I’m Dying Up Here and will star in the network's upcoming show Kidding, which debuts in September.
The iconic comedian recently caused a slight storm on Twitter for expressing his disgust with the NFL for its decision regarding players rights to kneel during the national anthem. In May, the NFL released a statement saying players were no longer required to be present on the field for the anthem, but if they were on the field, they had to stand or face "appropriate discipline."
