UPDATE (2/29/16): Following our previous coverage of this story, authorities in Washington State have allegedly learned that Salma Hayek's neighbor is responsible for shooting her dog. The dog had reportedly trespassed on the neighbor's property and attacked other animals, so the neighbor used a pellet gun to scare 9-year-old Mozart away without intent to kill him. As TMZ reports:
Authorities have reportedly closed the case. Hayek's reps have yet to comment on the issue publicly.

People have done some extraordinarily stupid things with a gun in hand—pointing one at children, for example; or bringing one to a job interview. This one's heartbreaking. Salma Hayek took to her Instagram on Friday to share a harrowing report that someone, presumably someone lacking any sense of empathy, shot and killed her beloved dog, Mozart. Who does this?!
In her lengthy post, Hayek reports that Mozart was found dead a week ago "with a shot close to his heart." Authorities in Washington State, where Hayek's ranch is located, are investigating the incident. There's no word yet on what, if any, clear motive could have possessed someone to murder the animal.
According to Page Six, Hayek's ranch "serves as an animal sanctuary and houses several rescue dogs, horses, alpacas, parrots and other pets."
