The family of Bettie Jones, the 55-year-old mother of five killed "accidentally" by Chicago police during an altercation with 19-year-old neighbor Quintonio LeGrier on Dec. 26, is now filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the city.
NBC reports a press release from Power Rogers and Smith, P.C. states "one of Bettie Jones' five children was in the home when a bullet passed through the walls. The lawsuit also includes a claim for unintentional emotional distress for her daughter as a result of the Dec. 26 shooting."
Police have since admitted that the death was a mistake, releasing a statement that said, "The 55-year-old female victim was accidentally struck and tragically killed. The department extends its deepest condolences to the victim's family and friends."
Since the shooting, which killed both Jones and LeGrier, activists have demanded the resignation of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, especially amid ongoing protests against police brutality and fatal force that has resulted in multiple deaths, including that of 17-year-old Laquan Macdonald.
