Lamar Odom is taking a look back at his near-fatal overdose in 2015.
The former NBA star made an appearance on the Australian morning radio show, the Kyle & Jackie O Show, where he talked about surviving the incident and its aftermath.
“I do remember, but I don’t really remember because I was in a coma,” said Odom around the one hour and 29 minute mark here. “I had 12 strokes and six heart attacks when I was underneath seeing all black.”
Odom overdosed on Oct. 13, 2015, when he was found unconscious at a Nevada brothel. His ex Khloé Kardashian stayed by his side until he emerged from a four-day coma.
“I remember on my way to that damn brothel, I remember being upset that I didn’t have any cocaine to take to the brothel … I had just signed the divorce papers and I thought I was just gonna go all the way in,” he continued.
From there, Odom recounted putting money on a credit card in an attempt to keep his plan a secret and remembered having a drink before waking up three days later in the hospital with his overdose making headlines.
“I don't know what they were able to slip into my drink or what the fuck,” he added. “When I woke up, I couldn't walk or talk … It took some months of rehabilitation and a lot of prayers, a lot of determination.”
Odom, who also said, “You have nothing to do after you beat your death,” seems committed to growing from the experience and helping others who are struggling with addiction in the process.
“I think now my mission is probably to help people who have the same problem who couldn't help themselves be able to understand addiction and understand that it's a brain disease,” he continued.
“So could you imagine if your brain was diseased and you kept feeding it poison, how would you act out? And I think it's important for people to really understand and educate themselves.”
