Video-streaming service, Shomi, was launched in 2014 as a Canadian competitor to Netflix. With a collection of quality content, media giants, Shaw and Rogers, partnered to bring Shomi to Canadian audiences. Now, after two years of broadcasting, both parent companies are shutting the property down. The announcement of the cancelation was confirmed yesterday in an official tweet.
Alongside its American rival, Shomi had to slug it out against Bell Media's own, CraveTV. Both of the Canadian services have struggled to topple Netflix Canada. The latter has been dominating the market with a reported 5.4 million subscribers. That's miles ahead of Shomi and Crave's modest combined total, 740,000. This factor, alongside the extremely popular Netflix originals, no doubt contributed to the fall of Shomi. The streaming service will officially cease its operations, on November 30th. Until then, users will still be able to access their accounts normally.
