Despite the negative reaction to the final season of Game of Thrones, the HBO fantasy epic took home the Outstanding Drama Series award at the 2019 Emmys. With the show once again in the spotlight, those behind and in front of the camera have started to open up about how they feel about the divisive Season 8. When the cast and crew were asked by press about how they dealt with the reaction to the last season, Deadline reports that Jon Snow actor Kit Harington jumped at the chance.

"Controversy. I still haven’t seen the show, so that’s how I dealt with that controversy," he explained. "I haven’t seen the final season, but I know what it took to shoot it and it was hard, and everyone put their love and effort into it. Controversy for us—we knew what we were doing was right story wise and we knew that it was right for the characters because we lived with them for ten years. Controversy for us—didn’t really effect us."

Co-creator David Benioff, who alongside his creative partner D.B. Weiss has received the brunt of the criticism, added, "It was always going to be Bran as the king at the end."

In separate interview, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series nominee Emilia Clarke brushed off the negativity, too. "You know what? It was profoundly flattering is what it was because when someone cares that much that they’re ready to make such a noise about how they believe the characters should’ve been finished and how the story should’ve gone," she told Variety. "That’s just enormously flattering. That just shows how much everybody loved it.”
