When one speaks publicly about JAY-Z and/or Beyoncé, one must also be prepared to face the responses of the Hive. Those are the facts. For Tamera Mowry-Housley, however, the reaction to her recent sharing of a certain JAY anecdote took her by surprise.
"I think in the beginning, I was aloof," she told Us Weekly at this weekend's NAACP Image Awards, where JAY was honored with this year's President's Award. "I was like, 'What's going on?'" Ultimately, however, Mowry isn't one for poring over social media intricacies. "I don't like to make an agreement with it, and what I mean by that is making an agreement with my spirit, with my soul, because I'm a very positive person," she said.
As you'll recall, Mowry recalled a gum-related encounter with JAY earlier this month on The Real. "You do get, like, hit with the charm," she said at the time of meeting JAY when she was 23 at a Nutty Professor premiere. "I found myself strangely asking for gum...and he gave me some gum! He did. I don't know. It was his charm."
The fan reaction to that innocent recollection, as Mowry explained this week, came as a bit of a shock from her perspective. "What's so funny is that I never thought it was going to be a big deal," she said. "All I did was ask for gum and thought he was pretty cool. That's it." As for future gum requests, Mowry joked that she would again ask JAY for some if the two bumped into each other at that night's NAACP Image Awards ceremony. Beyoncé, she added, would be met with the same request.
It's been a stacked month of distinctions for JAY and Bey, who were both also honored at this month's GLAAD Media celebration with the Vanguard Award. "We would like to request that we continue to shift the stigmas in this community," Bey told the crowd at the Beverly Hilton when accepting the award.
