After sharing a daunting teaser last month, Netflix has unleashed the official trailer for its forthcoming take on the origin story of everyone’s favorite teenage witch. In it, we get a look at just how dark, creepy, and bloody the producers decided to make Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, led by Mad Men actress Kiernan Shipka.
In the full trailer, we’re introduced to Sabrina Spellman, a teen with a witchy secret preparing for her 16th birthday. However, quickly the visuals shift from the lighthearted misadventures of a half-human, half-witch teen, to a bloody ritual, death, and a number of pentagrams. In the process of choosing what path she wants to take in life, Sabrina must confront a gang of mean witchy teens, a really creepy looking goat thing (the devil?), and her own exorcism.
That’s not to say this is a full-blown, Emily Rose-level horror series. The lighthearted music of the trailer, as well as funny quips like “Girls, girls let’s not be catty bitches,” from the mouth of a character named Madame Satan (why not?), serve to buffer scenes of the gruesome adventures Sabrina goes on. Between the gore and witchcraft, this trailer does try to emphasize that Sabrina is really just a teen trying to find her identity and prove that she’s “not an evil person.” Still, you may want to watch with the lights on.
Sabrina and the mysterious town of Greendale exist in the same twisted world as Riverdale, and comes from the same executive producers, but it's unclear if the series will tie into each other. Chilling Advenutres of Sabrina hits Netflix on Oct. 26.
