We've quickly reached that point in the "Look What You Made Me Do" news cycle where a single, nonspecific tweet inspires multiple speculative articles. Thursday, Nicki Minaj sent out a tweet that many fans are convinced is a response to Taylor Swift's currently-being-roasted new single.
Of course, this could just as easily be a well-timed Kendrick Lamar (who, ironically enough, collaborated with Swift on the "Bad Blood" remix years ago) reference. Still, fans took the tweet—Kendrick-influenced or otherwise—as Nicki's way of addressing Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do."
Back in 2015, Minaj questioned the validity of the MTV Video Music Awards nominations after Swift's "Bad Blood" received a nod for Video of the Year. "If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year," she tweeted.
Though Minaj's tweets didn’t mention anyone by name, Swift later responded. "I've done nothing but love & support you," she said. "It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot." Swift also invited Minaj to join her onstage at that year's VMAs broadcast.
Later, Katy Perry—who just released her "Swish Swish" video with Minaj this week—offered some thoughts on irony:
Swift eventually apologized.
Though Minaj's lines on "Swish Swish" aren't believed to have a single thing to do with Swift (but plenty to do with Remy Ma), Perry's lyrics have been met with the opposite interpretation.
