You needn’t look any further than A Tribe Called Quest’s latest album to get the iconic hip-hop group’s thoughts about President-elect Donald Trump. The late Phife Dawg directly addressed Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan and took center stage on a separate track entitled “The Donald.” In the wake of Trump’s disrespectful tweets to Civil Rights icon and U.S. Representative John Lewis, Q-Tip directly responded to Trump in a series of tweets Sunday.
“No matter party line, age, religion, race, etc...There is no time for division,” Q-Tip tweeted. “We need to be united. Respecting our elders @realDonaldTrump is a ancient, Godly, and worldwide principal.”
The back and forth regarding Lewis was set in motion when Lewis testified against Sen. Jeff Sessions, who is Trump’s pick for attorney general. Lewis went on to add that he didn’t view Trump as a “legitimate president” after a government probe linking Russian hackers to the 2016 election Trump won over Hillary Clinton. Trump responded with two tweets attacking Lewis’ district and personal track record as a politician.
After much criticism, Trump somewhat walked back his insults stating, "I can use all the help I can get." The original, ill-timed tweets came on the weekend leading up to the commemorative holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr., and Lewis marched side-by-side with King and other Civil Rights pioneers as a chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in the 1960s.
Q-Tip’s tweets come after Trump posted more tweets of his own about anger and division within the nation. Interestingly enough, some of the recent anger and division has been caused by Trump’s suggestion to install a Muslim registry, as well as build a wall on the border of the U.S. and Mexico.
