Dr. Dre has confirmed that he's committing $10 million to help construct a performing arts center on Compton High School's new campus. The Compton Unified School District announced that the pioneering producer and founding N.W.A member, would help financially support the project Thursday, and Dre confirmed the news via a statement.
“My goal is to provide kids with the kind of tools and learning they deserve,” Dre said. “The performing arts center will be a place for young people to be creative in a way that will help further their education and positively define their future.”
Dre and Jimmy Iovine also pledged $70 million to establish the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation in 2013.
From his ’90s hits with N.W.A, to his work at Death Row Records and Aftermath Entertainment, Dre’s name has been synonymous with Compton, including but not limited to his 2015 album Compton (A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre).
The original Compton High, which boasts celebrity alumns like the late Eazy-E and the Game, announced construction plans for a new Compton High School in late 2016. The school is expected to serve approximately 2,500 students, and officials shared expectations of the performing arts center doubling as a community resource. Completion of construction on the project is slated for 2020.
“The support that Dre has shown to Compton over the years is unwavering and we are so excited that we will now be home to one of the greatest performing arts centers in the country,” president of Compton Unified’s governing board of trustees, Satra Zurita said while speaking with Gerrick Kennedy of the Los Angeles Times.
