DJ Unk's wife has revealed his cause of death.
On Sunday, the rapper's widow, Sherkita Long-Platt, spoke to TMZ and explained that the Atlanta legend died in his sleep at age 43 after going through cardiac arrest. She also shot down the rumors that he died as a result of taking drugs, which some people believed after news of his death was released.
TMZ confirmed a candlelight vigil will take place for Unk in Atlanta on Sunday. This isn't the first time Unk, born Anthony Leonard Platt, suffered a heart attack: He was hospitalized for one in 2009.
The cause of death news comes two days after Unk's wife announced on Facebook that he died.
"Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER," she wrote.
Korey "Big Oomp" Robinson, who signed Unk to his label Big Oomp Records in 2000, also shared some kind words to honor the late rapper and DJ.
"DJ Unk was not just a legendary DJ, rapper, and producer, but a true cornerstone of our label, and the imprint that he left globally will be cherished forever," Robinson wrote in his statement. "Hit songs such as 'Walk It Out' and '2 Step' have left an indelible mark on the industry, and his legacy will continue to inspire artists, DJs, and fans alike for years to come. His energy, creativity, and commitment to the craft will never be forgotten.
Robinson added, "We ask that you keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We also want to thank everyone who has supported DJ Unk and the Oomp Camp over the years."
