Finneas, the musical polymath and brother to Billie Eilish, has once again stepped out on his own to unveil his debut album Optimist. The artist also dropped off the music video for the album’s track “Love Is Pain.”
The Grammy award winner’s debut follows in the footsteps of his EP Blood Harmony, and was led by the singles “What They’ll Say About Us, “A Concert Six Months From Now,” and “The 90s.” The latter two came with gorgeous music videos directed by Sam Bennett and were thematically stark contrasts to each other. “A Concert Six Months From Now” found Finneas dressed in all black, wandering around a vacant Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, whereas “The 90s” featured Finneas in a bright polka dot shirt as he takes part in a colorful choreographed dance routine involving kaleidoscopic umbrellas.
The 13-track debut is also Finneas’s first album to be released since signing to Interscope Records earlier this year. He recently spoke about the project’s title with NME, saying he named his debut Optimist because optimism is something he struggles with. “It’s definitely something I have to work at,” he told the outlet. “The version of me that I wish I always was is the optimistic, helpful, positive me, which is aspirational for me. There’s a lot of reason to be pessimistic in the world but you can still choose to be like, ‘We shouldn’t really give up on this.’”
Finneas is also in the throws of a 22-date solo tour, which runs all the way through the end of November. Aside from soundtracking the new Bond film No Time To Die alongside his sister, Finneas also appeared on the official soundtrack for the film adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen, joining a plethora of other big acts like SZA, Sam Smith, and Carrie Underwood, who also contributed to the soundtrack.
