A Twitter account that shares old videos from Toronto posted part of a CBC News report that focused on hip-hop's emergence in Canada.
The piece was aired in 1990 and highlighted venues that played hip-hop exclusively to entice people to come and dance.
It also showed that certain rappers would try to inspire others with insightful political lyrics.
"Rap is conscious, it's gearing itself towards educating people, to go positive, not negative," said DJ Ron Nelson at the time. "To stay away from crime, to stay away from drugs, to stay away from anything violent and anything criminal and going in a more positive direction. Being who you are capable of being in life."
The initial reactions to the video were warm with many people celebrating how artists pioneered the genre in Canada.
Several people shouted Nelson out for his work within the genre.
Someone else said you could recreate the night shown in the video today.
Another person was happy to see the diversity in Toronto during a time where it wasn't as prevalent as it is today.
Ron Nelson is a hip-hop icon in Toronto having taught a course at York University for 12 years. He also dropped his first rap album 40 Years Too Late in February.
