What would you do on a random midweek July afternoon if you had 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 M's in your bank account? Well, if you also happen to be 21 Savage, you would jam out to some classic R&B in your mansion's expensive-looking fresco room, obviously. The Atlanta native took to his Instagram stories recently to share a very personal one-man karaoke session that included hits by R. Kelly, Ja Rule, SZA, and SWV.
The effort is what counts here—after all, he’s definitely not hitting those high notes, especially in SZA’s “The Weekend.” His selection is also a testament to his wide-ranging tastes: as BET notes, 21 had to go all the way to the mid-'90s to find SWV’s “When U Cry,” the Tyrone Davis–sampling track off the girl group’s third studio album, Release Some Tension.
There’s one artist 21 didn’t sing along to: Drake. In a recent GQ profile, 21 spoke highly of Drizzy, who was crucial to his own career, spotlighting him in the 2016 song “Sneakin.” "Drake just a genuine-ass good-hearted person,” 21 said. "He did a lot of shit he didn’t have to do. He do a lot of shit for up-and-coming rappers, period. I don’t think he get his respect for that. Every fuckin' year, he pull a new artist up. Ain't no other artist on his level do that shit."
In any case, these Instagram karaoke sessions showcase a softer side to the Atlanta rapper, providing a real variety to some of the other content that he shares on the platform. Back in June, for example, he took to his social media to deliver a scathing rebuke of fellow Atlanta rappers, calling them all, as a group, materialistic “bitch ass n***as” with no morals.
