Jacquees has received a plenty of petty feedback since dubbing himself the "King of R&B" earlier this month, but the dissent has officially reached new heights.
Ricky Fields launched a petition titled "Ban Jacquees from doing any music covers" addressed to "the People" on Change.org the week leading up to Christmas. As the title suggests, the petition calls for Jacquees to stop covering other artists. "As a black community, we have to figure out how we getting rid of Jacquees," it reads. In just a week, the petition has reached its initial goal of 25,000 signatures and then some.
Some of the songs he has covered include Beyonce’s “Bow Down,” Donnie Hathaway’s “This Christmas,” Ella Mai's "Trip," and Michael Jackson's "Dirty Diana."
Some of the signees took the liberty of commenting on the petition to express their discontent. Brandi Johnson from Carson, CA writes, "This fool had the NERVE to cover the Legendary Michael Jackson! He MUST be stopped immediately." It should be noted that Jacquees did end up apologizing to Keith Sweat for the "King" comment, although for many R&B fans, the damage had already been done. Kashona Thompson from Akron, OH added, "He must be stopped! He disrespected Keith Sweat, then I just heard his Dirty Diana cover. The boy has gone mad! Plus he dresses like a toddler."
In early December, Jacquees took to Instagram to crown himself with a title that many believe he doesn't deserve. "I just wanna let everybody know that I'm the king of R&B right now," he said in a video. "For this generation, I understand who done came and who done did that and that and that, but now it's my time. Jacquees the king of R&B."
A number of R&B icons, including Ty Dolla $ign, Trey Songz, Tory Lanez, and J. Holliday, took to Twitter to theoretically put the young singer in his place. Tyrese also checked Jacquees when he reminded the young singer, "The young kings of your generation that's been runnin' shit is 1) Chris Brown and 2) Trey Songz."
