The performance featured Chance the Rapper singing a tribute to the late boxer, accompanied by the band and singer Jamila Woods. Woods previously collaborated with Chance on the song "Sunday Candy." The song was introduced by basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The heartfelt ballad's refrain said of Ali, "Ain't no one prettier/ Ain't no one wiser/ Ain't no one better."

Prior to the ceremony, both Donnie Trumpet and Chance the Rapper teased the tribute performance on social media. And although they provided very little details on what their set would include, many assumed that the group would deliver a performance worthy of the sports legend. Later, Chance revealed that he wrote the song a few days before and even tweeted out the inspiration for it.

I wrote the song a few days ago, it doesn't have a name yet. But this is where I got the inspiration. #ESPYS
