Ludacris’ longtime manager Chaka Zulu was shot Sunday night in Atlanta.
XXL reports Zulu, the co-CEO of Disturbing Tha Peace Records, was wounded in a shooting at a restaurant in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood around 11:35 p.m. on Sunday.
According to an incident report from the Atlanta Police Department, Zulu was one of three men shot outside of Afro-Caribbean restaurant APT 4B. OkayPlayer reports the deceased victim has been identified by the the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as 23-year-old Artez Benton, while Zulu and another unnamed person were transported to a local hospital. The gunman is still at large.
“The victims were transported to the hospital where one of them was later pronounced deceased,” police said. “Homicide investigators responded to the scene to begin investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. This investigation remains active and ongoing at this time.”
A report from WSBTV states Zulu is in “stable condition.” The update on his condition comes from former Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed: “We are fortunate to report that Chaka Zulu is in stable condition and recovering. The family thanks everyone for their well wishes and prayers, and asks for their privacy at this time,” the text read.
Alongside Ludacris, Chaka Zulu and his brother, Jeff Dixon, founded Disturbing Tha Peace Records, now a subsidiary of Def Jam, in 1998. A division of Universal Music Group, the label has been home to artists such as Chingy, Shawnna, Bobby V, Playaz Circle, Lil Scrappy and more.
Prior to founding Disturbing Tha Peace, Zulu established himself as an on-air talent while attending Clark Atlanta University. From there, he become a music director for Atlanta’s Hot 97.5 (now 107.9) radio station.
Since then, Zulu has furthered his music career by serving as Head of Artist & Talent for Spotify, as well as holding producer titles at Sony Music/Columbia Records and Universal Music Group/Island Def Jam.
