Ashanti has addressed whether she and Nelly could get back together after they reunited for a performance of “Body On Me.”
During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Ashanti was asked by fans if she would ever get back together with her ex, whom she was with for around a decade. “Oh my gosh,” she said, noting the reactions to their recent "Body On Me" performance. “I saw a lot of comments. My reaction was…wow. It was a lot of comments and a lot of people wanting that.”
The two first started dating in 2003, and later parted ways sometime around 2013 or 2014. It didn’t end on the best of terms, but they’re thankfully in a “better place” these days, Ashanti explained. “Because before it was like [punches the air]. We have some conversations [now]," she continued. "So it was cool.” Cohen then straight-up asked Ashanti, “But you’re not getting back together?” Instead of giving a regular response, she added, “I mean, I don’t,” and laughed.
The two reunited onstage for the first time in years in 2021 during Ja Rule and Fat Joe’s Verzuz battle. They performed “What’s Luv?” together with Ja, and some fans noticed that Nelly made sure to give Ashanti a hug during their appearance.
In an interview on The Meredith Vieira Show in 2015, Ashanti reflected on the end of their relationship and suggested that she had been “betrayed” by Nelly. "I think sometimes when people have their own insecurities it allows them to act out of character," she said. "I'm not a big fan of people being cowards. I think it’s really important to know yourself and understand what you want and get it. I’m in a different place right now."
