It is, of course, quite hard to overstate the sonic impact Abel's distinctive blend of songwriting prowess has had on music at large. And at one point, even Abel himself was a little turned off by the obviousness of that influence, though he's since learned to take it all as the biggest of compliments.
"House of Balloons literally changed the sound of pop music before my eyes," he explained to Variety. "I heard 'Climax,' that  Usher song, and was like, 'Holy fuck, that's a Weeknd song.' It was very flattering, and I knew I was doing something right, but I also got angry. But the older I got, I realized it's a good thing."
