After 10 weeks on top, Cardi B and Maroon 5 have dethroned Drake to take the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Girls Like You." The remix released in late May sat patiently in the No. 2 spot for six weeks before knocking out Drizzy's viral sensation "In My Feelings."
This No. 1 record follows news that Maroon 5 will be performing at the 2019 Super Bowl in Atlanta. Though the announcement was met with plenty of eye rolls, it likely helped propel "Girls Like You" into the top spot. Meanwhile, there are reports that Cardi is also in talks to land her own Super Bowl halftime show set.
Cardi expressed her excitement over the achievement on IG, and shared a bit of history behind the collab. "My verse almost didn't got approved because I already did two pop records, and my team felt like 'yo it's too early in your career to be doing pop pop pop...' But I was like 'yo trust my judgment. Like this is a motherfucking hit,'" Cardi explains. "And for some reason when I first heard this song it made me wanna cry, maybe because I was pregnant with a girl and the words are just so beautiful."
This marks Maroon 5's fourth No. 1 song, and Cardi B's third—making her the first female rapper with three No. 1 hit songs, following "Bodak Yellow" and "I Like It" with J Balvin and Bad Bunny. Per Billboard, "Girls Like You" is also the first pop song to top the Hot 100 since January.
The remix of "Girls Like You" was accompanied by a star-studded video featuring the likes of Millie Bobby Brown, Ellen, Tiffany Haddish, Gal Gadot, Jennifer Lopez, and more. The original version came out in 2017 on Maroon 5's album Red Pills Blue, but Cardi helped breathe new life into the single, and undoubtedly helped secure this No. 1 spot.
