Former Dallas police officer, Amber Guyger, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing Botham Jean, according to the local ABC-affiliate.
Guyger was found guilty of murder on Tuesday. At this point, she was facing between 5-99 years behind bars. The jury began sentencing deliberations on Wednesday afternoon. During the deliberations, the state asked that the jury consider a sentence of no less than 28 years (the age Jean would be if he was alive). They also presented jurors with a series of social media messages and text messages in which Guyger admitted to being a racist following testimony from those close to Jean. Jean's brother testified that he didn't want Guyger to go to jail. "If you truly are sorry — I know I can speak for myself — I forgive you," Brandt Jean said. "I love you as a person and I don't wish anything bad on you." He then asked the judge if he could hug Guyger, and after getting the green light, the two embraced, as Guyger could be heard sobbing in court.
