Gavin NewsomΒ soundly defeated efforts to recall him and will remain the Governor of California, according to projections fromΒ NBC News, theΒ Associated Press, and CNN.
The Republican-backed campaign failed to garner the 50 percentΒ of votes needed to remove Newsom from his position. Around 1.5 million Californians signed theΒ petition that initiated the recall vote. Of the votes counted so far, over 66 percent of people voted against recallingΒ NewsomΒ with an estimated 63Β percent of ballots counted, the New York Timesreports. Caitlyn Jenner andΒ conservative talk radio hostΒ Larry Elder were among the Republicans who were hoping to replace Gov. Newsom.
βNo is not the only thing that was expressed tonight,β NewsomΒ said following his victory, per Yahoo News. βI want to focus on what we said yes to as a state. We said yes to science. We said yes to vaccines. We said yes ending this pandemic.β
He continued, βIβm humbled and grateful to the millions and millions of Americans who exercised their fundamental right to vote and expressed themselves so overwhelmingly by rejecting the division, by rejecting the cynicism, by rejecting so much of the negativity thatβs defined our politics in this country.β
Newsom is only the second governor in history to triumph over a recall.Β Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was the first.
Newson, who is 53 years old, will seek another term in next yearβs gubernatorial election, which will go down on November 8, 2022.Β
