Former President George Herbert Walker Bush has died at the age of 94.

He was the forty-first president of the United States. Bush, a Republican, was elected to the presidency in 1988, defeating Democrat Michael Dukakis in the Electoral College 426 to 111. He received just over 53% in the popular vote. He would go on to lose his 1992 reelection campaign to then Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton. Previous to becoming president, Bush was the Vice President of the United States under Ronald Reagan. He was also the Director of Central Intelligence from 1976 to 1977.

Bush's son, George W. Bush, the forty-third president of the United States, released a statement on the passing of his father. "Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died. George H. W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for," the statement reads. "The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41’s life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens."
