Back in January, wings + horns gave us an exclusive look at its Fall/Winter 2015 collection—a range that was heavily inspired by astronauts and aviation.

The selection of parkas, blazers, knits, and vests was pretty solid to say the least, but there was one item that really caught our eye: the shearling aviator jacket.

Hand-knit virgin wool sleeves, twin leather belting straps, brass buckles, contrast patch pockets, and an antiqued natural lamb shearling body? It was nothing short of aces. And now that the Fall/Winter 2015 collection has finally dropped, wings + horns is giving us an even closer look at the jacket as well as some information on what inspired it.

It turns out this particular design was heavily influenced by the B-3 cold weather flight jacket, a garment developed by the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. The heavy-duty construction was intended to keep flight crews warm during the cold and extended missions at high altitude. wings + horns nods to this superior craftsmanship with contemporary touches that don’t compromise the functional aspects.

You can get a closer look at the piece, available in black and brown colorways, below. If you’re in the market for some seasonal outerwear that will combat the winter chill, you can pick up the jacket at wings + horns’ online store.
