Actor Robert De Niro turns 68 today, so let's pay him respect by taking a look at some of the best characters he has played during his (very long) career. And since Fall is right around the corner, we're taking our upcoming shopping cues from these guys. Whether it's an obsessed baseball fan in a varsity jacket, or a lgangster in a dope camel overcoat, check out our gallery of De Niro's Most Stylish Moments.
Vito Corleone
As the young Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II, De Niro kept things classy but still gangster with a blazer that was still a little rough around the edges. Go for something dark and unstructured for a similar feel.
Rag & Bone Philips Blazer, $495
Travis Bickle
The mentally unstable Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver was often seen sporting his M-65 jacket. This versatile piece is sure to be a go-to jacket once the temperature drops and it's not quite time for something super heavy.
Aloha Rag M-65, $206
Travis Bickle
Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver is quite possibly the best-dressed De Niro character. We can definitely cosign getting a snap-button western buttondown for fall. Take this one from Levi's for example.
Levi's Barstow Western Shirt, $68
Bruce Pearson
The role of catcher Bruce Pearson for fictional baseball team the New York Mammoths brought De Niro into the spotlight as an actor, while the film Bang the Drum Slowly didn't garner any Oscars, it's still worth a watch for any fan of De Niro or baseball. A nice flannel cap is always a good pick-up for Fall, and true fans can get this replica Mammoths cap made by Ebbets Field Flannels.
Ebbets Field Flannels New York Mammoths 1972 Cap, $19.50
Jake LaMotta
Based on the life of Bronx boxer Jake LaMotta, the film Raging Bull scored De Niro an Oscar for his performance. Sure, we could have gone with an array of trunks and sweats to choose from, but how could anyone forget LaMotta's iconic leopard print robe? Kimpton Hotels gives out animal-print bathrobes, with a leopard print one going out to guests of the Hotel Palomar. Now you can cop one for the house, and ball out while you lounge.
Palomar Leopard Robe, $90
Jack Walsh
Bounty hunter Jack Walsh didn't take shit from anyone, especially The Duke, played by Charles Grodin. While the action/comedy Midnight Run is not one of De Niro's most memorable, it's still quite the enjoyable movie because of its two leads. De Niro's Walsh also rocks the hell out of a good leather jacket, and it's definitely well broken-in by the film's end. For a similar look, check out the Panther jacket from Belstaff. Car chases and shootouts not advised.
Belstaff Panther Jacket, $1,489
Gilbert "Gil" Renard
Ok, ok maybe The Fan wasn't De Niro's greatest work, but the guy does make a good villain. We're not saying you should be as obsessed with sports as Gil Renard was, but a good solid varsity jacket can't hurt against the elements. Unionmade has been making some good ones with Golden Bear recently, in unconventional styles like this open-bottom verson.
Unionmade x Golden Bear Open-Bottom Varsity Jacket in Red, $225
Michael Vronsky
The Deer Hunter is a pretty intense movie. While there are many iconic looks, including the infamous Russian Roulette scene, De Niro's Sgt. Michael "Mike" Vronsky looks his best in this Sierra Designs 60/40 parka. You can't mess with a classic, but you can still own one.
Sierra Designs 60/40 Short Parka, $199
Max Cady
Remember that scene in Cape Fear where Max Cady is being a total creepy dickwad in the movie theater? Man, that's talent. De Niro is one of the few actors that can play a tattooed maniac in a Hawaiian shirt and not get typecast as "that guy." We're not advocating that you should stalk a family, but Hawaiian prints are kinda everywhere right now, and as we transition into Fall they make a good piece to put under heavier coats to remind us of summer. Plus, the Reyn Spooner for Opening Ceremony collaboration updates the Hawaiian shirt with a slimmer fit and dope patterns.
Reyn Spooner for Opening Ceremony Short Sleeve Summer Top, $130
Al Capone
Before Nucky Thompson, before Scarface, Al Capone was a boss. Portrayed by De Niro in The Untouchables, his camel hair coat still stands the test of time. It doesn't hurt to have armed bodyguards either, but with winter right around the corner, we think just the coat will do. Check out this one from Swedish brand Acne, with flap pockets and a slimmer lapel. It's not too formal and would look as dope over a cardigan and tee as it would over a suit jacket.
Acne Winston Wool Coat, $697
