It’s a new chapter for Bottega Veneta.

On Saturday, the Italian fashion house unveiled its much-anticipated men’s and women’s collection for winter 2022. The event not only marked Bottega’s big return to Milan Fashion Week, it also marked the official debut of the label’s new creative director Matthieu Blazy.

“I’ll be honest, I’m pretty nervous,” the La Cambre alumnus told Business of Fashion ahead of the show. “I hide it behind a big smile.”

Bottega appointed Blazy toward the end of 2021, following the sudden departure of English designer Daniel Lee, who is widely credited for reviving the legacy label. Under Lee, Bottega experienced a significant surge in revenue, thanks in large part to its modern adaptations of timeless pieces, such as suiting and fine leather goods.

“I want to reconnect with an Italian pedigree,” Blazy continued. “… So this first show for me is a base on which I’m going to build. I really want to go back to the idea of quiet power, the wardrobe. Style over screaming image. I wonder if people are going to expect me to show masks and a monster silhouette. You know, I’m also interested in just making a great pair of trousers. Can you move in them? Do they feel comfortable? Do they look good? Do you have a sense of allure and style in them? Seduction is an important word in the collection.”
