Futura is poised for a big 2020.
His new collection with Comme des Garçons debuted during Paris Fashion Week. Some pieces featured 1980s archive artwork by the graffiti artist, while others sported pleated bibs and abstract cut-outs. Among the other designs were layered, latticed, and bisected shirts, as well as straightforward pink and orange CdG staples.
Speaking with Vogue, Futura said that the collection spawned from a meeting he had with Rei Kawakubo and Adrian Joffe at Dover Street Market, and the small collaboration he did last year for a surprise Commes “Black Market.” “It’s very flattering,” the artist said. “We selected a couple of pieces and said to Rei and Adrian ‘Just interpret them as you wish.’ It’s such an honor and you know you are going to get something great.”
Futura has a few other tricks up his sleeve. Nearly 15 years after his first collab with Levi’s, the legendary artist teamed up with the brand in December for its retail and customization experience during Art Basel in Miami. He’s also set to relaunch his brand Futura Laboratories and has teased a pair of Off-White x Futura Dunk Lows.
“I've always liked making clothing, having gear, and really FL for me is just another promotional vehicle to myself,” Futura told Complex. “It's like an offshoot of my artwork, a creative way that I can become more like, design, T-shirt, tchotchke. But then this year, the approach was maybe FL could be a design company but it could also co-brand with other artists and labels. FL is wondering what it is right now actually. But it's certainly done a good job of creeping into the marketplace, whether it's with Levi's or Star Wars and Funko. FL is appearing.”
