J.R. Smith Speaks on Getting Supreme Tattoo

J.R. Smith joins Joe La Puma at Stadium Goods in New York City for the latest 'Sneaker Shopping,' detailing his love of Supreme and how it inspired him to get some new ink.

For the latest episode of Complex's Sneaker Shopping, host Joe La Puma was joined at Stadium Goods in New York City by J.R. Smith of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The topic of Smith's recent Supreme tattoo was broached during the conversation. "It was a partnership on both sides," Smith said of modeling for the Supreme x Nike earlier collab this year. "They felt as if I would be a perfect athlete for it. I felt that I would be too. They reached out to my representation and we got the deal done. It's a perfect fit. I love it."

Supreme, Smith added, represents a branding that's similar to his own. As for the new ink, Smith was not paid for the calf piece. "I got the tattoo the other day, my guy Rico in the Bronx did it for me," he said. "There was a lot behind it. People were like, 'Are they paying you for it?' and I was like, 'No,' so they were like, 'What are you doing it for?' And I was like, 'That's who I am.' That's why I am who I am. It worked out."

Though Smith has received plenty of "great responses" to his Supreme tribute, he's also aware of some attempted detractors. "You know the trolls are always going to have something to say," he explained. "I’ll let that rock and take the win."
