The NFL trade deadline is typically nothing compared to the madness of the NBA trade deadline, where there's the potential of legit star players getting moved. This trend could soon move to the NFL, with stars like Cam Newton, AJ Green, Trent Williams, and more all popping up in rumors every single day. Teams like the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers seem to be very active. Really good teams are looking to go for it in a quest to win a Super Bowl.
Mid-season trades are no longer taboo, and now somewhat of the norm in the NFL. Just this season we've already seen star DBs Jalen Ramsey Minkah Fitzpatrick moved for multiple first round picks. Jadeveon Clowney was traded just before the season started. The Texans went all-in on a deal for LT Laremy Tunsil. The point is, the NFL is becoming the NBA in a sense, with a number of high profile players trying to force their way onto new teams.
With the NFL trade deadline rapidly approaching and the possibility of some major trades still on the way, the Complex Sports team put together a list of seven star players that should get moved before the October 29 deadline.
Cam Newton
Two years ago, you would laugh at the notion that the Panthers might consider trading Cam Newton. Well, here we are two years later and rumors continue to swirl about the former MVP's future in Carolina. Newton hasn't really been healthy in years and the team is playing well with Kyle Allen, but could they actually consider this? According to B/R, one GM in the league thinks as many as 10 teams would be interested in Newton if the Panthers did decide to trade him.
If the Panthers think that their run with Newton is over, why not just flip him at the deadline this year? Cut bait and move forward. Imagine the Chicago Bears adding Newton for a stretch run? Talk about fun. It's unclear if the Panthers would actually move Newton, but he's going to be healthy soon and they're going to have to face a difficult decision about their future.
AJ Green
We already wrote at length about which NFL teams should be interested in Green if the Bengals do decide to move the star WR. As of now, the team is insisting no trade is coming, but let's be honest, if the right offer comes, how could they no consider it? The Bengals are horrid this season and getting some draft capital for Green might be the best move going forward. Like we wrote before, the New England Patriots should be all over this one.
Von Miller
The Broncos have won two games in a row, but before that, there was a lot of talk about a fire sale in Denver. John Elway squashed some rumors, but if they start losing again, they're sure to pick back up. While it would be a drastic move to trade Von Miller, it might not be the worst thing for the Broncos to consider. Miller is already 30 and this team isn't really going anywhere. At some point you need to consider bottoming out and selling off some vets to think about the future. Could you imagine if the Dallas Cowboys were able to pull of a deal for Miller? That would be something.
Trent Williams
Offensive lineman trades aren't exactly sexy, but Trent Williams' name has been in trade rumors for months and that isn't going away as long as he stays away from the Washington Redskins. Williams is one of the best LTs in the NFL, and his name has been most commonly linked with the Cleveland Browns as they look to shore up their issues on the offensive line. Would this move be able to fix Baker Mayfield's season? It probably couldn't hurt.
Emmanuel Sanders
Even if the Broncos decide to hold onto Von Miller, why wouldn't they consider moving Emmanuel Sanders? He's still a very good WR in this league and could certainly help a number of teams out there looking to add some speed on the outside. Off the top, the Packers and 49ers should be calling about Sanders. He's a guy who could really add an extra punch to a contender the rest of the season.
OJ Howard
OJ Howard isn't exactly a huge name but he's a talented player who clearly isn't getting used to his full potential in Tampa Bay. It's unclear why Howard has fallen out of favor with the Buccaneers, but he's for sure not getting the targets a player of his caliber should be getting. Howard to the Patriots actually makes too much sense not to happen, especially with the fact that it sounds like Gronk is definitely staying retired.
Patrick Peterson
Patrick Peterson is back from suspension and though the Cardinals are saying he won't get traded, the Jaguars said the same thing about Jalen Ramsey. Peterson is an elite DB in the NFL and after striking out on Ramsey, the Eagles should be all over this. Like, they should be calling the Cardinals every single day before the deadline. Philly has a very good team, but until they shore up their secondary, they're going to continue to struggle. No team needs to make a move more than the Philadelphia Eagles.
Chris Harris Jr.
Feels like the entire Broncos roster is on the trade block, but you can't deny that they have talent that would help other teams. With Jalen Ramsey off the market, any team in need of DB help would be wise to call on Denver about Harris, who is still one of the best at his position in the NFL.
Mohamed Sanu
The Atlanta Falcons season is fading fast, which means they might need to consider trading off some of their better players for assets going forward. While teams might call about Julio Jones, it seems highly, highly unlikely that they move him after they just handed him a huge deal before the season. While Julio is off limits, Mohamed Sanu is a WR who could help fill a need for a playoff team. Think the New England Patriots or Green Bay Packers.
