The 20 Best New College Football Uniforms This Year

We really would have liked to see some matte grey helmets like Mizzou had, but these will do. The red and grey accents nicely complement each respective uniform. Overall, they're decent.

Like purple, brown is not exactly the most flattering color, especially when paired with yellow, but Wyoming pulls it off. The “Wyo” across the chest looks great and the variety of options will make sure the fans never get tired of staring at the same thing. The cowboy might need an update soon, though.

These unis just seem battle-tested. The matte black hardens the look and “Southern Miss” across the helmet still makes it feel a bit old school.

Basically, the old Colorado uniforms were really plain and boring. With a refined, less yellow-hued gold, the unis look a bit tougher and the stripes on the shoulder give it a nice collegiate look.

The Scarlet Knights didn't want to be left out, so they picked up the matte black helmets as well. It'll be interesting to see if these are just a fad, but they seem to make every uniform better.

The added spike running from the back of the helmet gives Fresno an added aggressiveness, while the added shoulder stripes and side panels make this uniform much more appealing than the old ones.

There's not much to say about these other than they just look cool. They are clean, the type choices aren't obnoxious, the stripe placement is solid and the helmets fit with every set of colors. Well done, Gamecocks!

How many teams can you name that wear purple and still look awesome? TCU has broken into the college football spotlight in the past 10 years, and in the process have made purple the cool thing to wear. The biggest change from last year is that it says TCU on the helmet instead of a horned frog emblem, and the two-tone on the jerseys and pants look tougher than ever.

The Cowboys don't have the polished look of some of the new Pro Combat uniforms, but there's something pleasing about the gritty impression. The accents on the shoulder remind you of the armed service patches, giving a whole new meaning to “earning your stripes.” Adding them down the leg are a nice complement as well.

The helmet is really what makes this ensemble stick out. The thick block racing stripe down the helmet is impossible to miss, but I would have liked to see some more black accents other than the shoulders the neck line in the front.

Out of the 30+ options that Under Armour gave Maryland, the Terps scrapped the flag unis that recieved a ton of criticism and decided on this for their upcoming game against West Virginia. We're actually a fan of the three-tone set. Some fans complained of the lack of “Terps” on the helmet, but using the flag as the top stripe is cool in moderation.

Hawaii's typography makes these uniforms one of the most unique in the country. The color scheme is nice and not too busy, and the large “Hawaii” across the chest isn't too overbearing. We wonder what a Pro Combat uni would look like if they were still the Rainbow Warriors.

Again, Nike has provided a menacing ensemble. The red is darker, the silver is more like gunmetal and the undershirt and gloves are patterned with a mix between camouflage and cement. The paneled jersey and pants also give nice order.

This would have an entirely different impression if Nike had used the traditional brighter Stanford red. However, the all-dark red uni with the white outlined numbers make this work extremely well.

Although all Pro Combat uniforms have special gloves, LSU's are easily the coolest. Most just have a letter or the school emblem, but LSU has terrifying tiger eyes that pierce anybody who takes a glance. The rest of the uni is put together nicely as well. The stripes and accents don't allow the white to dominate and the styling of the numbers maintains a traditional college football look.

Yet another product of Nike's Pro Combat series, the uniforms for the Spartans have an extremely bold and edgy look. They kept the same helmet symbol but traded their old ordinary green and white for a darker black, forest and gold scheme.

The Naval Academy is all about tradition and it showed in the uniforms. They were basic to say the least. Nike took the anchor that used to be on the shoulder and put it on a white helmet, which really pops with the dark jersey and pants. The letters also have some depth to them, which helps fuel the modern concept.

Football is all about intimidation and Arizona State's uniform nailed that right on the head. The matte black helmets and trident are much more serious than that little cartoon devil, and the fade in the numbers is a nice touch.

Oregon is basically the mecca of football uniforms. Nike and Phil Knight are the originators of the Pro Combat and the whole “let's have a new uniform every single game” idea. With attention always comes criticism. Regardless of some of the other hideous Oregon uniforms that have been made, the duds they came out with against LSU were sharp. They were sleek, they maintained depth and texture despite being all black and the yellow “O” stood out more than ever. Now if they could just give the Ducks a little more speed against non-Pac 12 opponents...

It can be difficult to make bright blues and oranges look well, but Nike used a minimalist approach and it turned out great. The all white gives an extremely clean and classy look and the over-sized bronco head gives a feel of dominance. Not a bad uni to celebrate the first non-BCS national championship perhaps?
