There are three responses to the new Mercedes-Benz Concept Coupé SUV: 1. "BMX X6, anybody?" 2. "EWWWW, why? Throw it in the wood chipper! 3. "Give that to me now!"
It's an extremely polarizing vehicle, mainly because people who know cars will tell you how useless it really is, and people who just buy cars because, "look at my sweet Benz! I have monies!" think it's sexy and would probably be fine with making the U in SUV lowercase. And it's those latter people who Mercedes is going to be gunning for with this segment. It's obvious that this car will sell, because the X6 already sells, and it's essentially the same vehicle (better-looking, too, in our opinion). People are eating up this "four-door coupe" styling, regardless of what that means for headroom and cubic feet. If they want something a little less exciting, that's what the ML or GL are for.
The SUV Coupe might be a drastic departure from the typical utility vehicle you see around the market, but it closely follows the language that Merc has been gaining huge momentum on. You have the trapezoidal grille with the giant star and the splitting line, you have the same style LED headlights with the upper brow, you have the gaping corner intakes on the face. Moving to the back, you have the high beltline, and the rear is almost a direct copy of the 2015 S63 AMG Coupé. If you think an SUV that has styling cues from the stunning S63 AMG Coupé is going to sit on lots, you're in denial.
As far as the underpinnings go, rumor has it that buyers will have an option of a 3.5L V6 or a twin-turbo 4.2L V8. There's also a possibility for a diesel (not in the U.S., obviously). It will probably have four-wheel-drive, as well. Expect to see rich people driving these all over the place in about two years.
