While details are scarce, F4WOnline reports that WWE superstar John Cena could be out of action for six to nine months due to a reported rotator cuff injury that will require surgery. Cena tweeted that he's set to head to Birmingham, Ala. tomorrow for surgery:

Rather upside down start to 2016 as tomorrow I will head to Birmingham for shoulder surgery. Life's full of set backs but #nevergiveup

For those who follow the WWE, Cena had just recently returned to action at the end of December after being off WWE TV while filming a reality TV series for Fox. It was believed that he'd start a program with Alberto Del Rio, picking up where they left off back in October, but after returning on the last Raw of 2015, Cena was noticeably absent during this week's show. As of right now, there's no word on if this is an injury Cena had been dealing with or if he recently got hurt.

The WWE has suffered a number of key injuries as of late, with Seth Rollins currently out of action with a major knee injury, as well as injuries to Randy OrtonCesaro, and others thinning out their roster. While Chris Jericho just returned this past Monday and Brock Lesnar is set to return to the WWE next week, the roster appears to be weaker than it has been in recent years, especially heading into WrestleMania season, aka the WWE's busiest time of year. Rumors had Cena possibly facing The Undertaker at WrestleMania 32 this year, but with this injury and surgery, that will more than likely not take place.

If anything, this would explain why Cena made an appearance on this week's Smackdown tapings that lead into Del Rio getting into a match with Kalisto, who is rumored to now be in Cena's spot of feuding with Del Rio for the United States championship.
