On Sunday, Brooklyn Nets point guard Jeremy Lin was a guest at The New Yorker Festival and touched on a number of topics, ranging from the rise of Linsanity to experiencing racism throughout his collegiate years while playing for Harvard. NBC News correspondent Jo Ling Kent was in attendance, and live-tweeted some of the more memorable moments.
When it came to encountering racism, Lin says most of it came his way when playing against other Ivy League schools. The referees would hear racial slurs directed at him, but do nothing about it. Lin credits his coach for helping him "channel the negative racist experiences into positive performance and energy on the court."
After going undrafted in the 2010, J-Lin was financially supported by his mom, who took money out of her 401(k) even though she and her husband were both laid off.
As for the Linsanity craze, Jeremy admits he was not enjoying the game of basketball because he was "putting so much pressure on himself to succeed or be what everyone else wanted me to be," and noticed people around him changing.
