Google Maps has now added a fifth option for you to get from a to b. You can drive, bike, walk, use public transportation, or use Uber, the hugely popular taxi service that will probably get an even bigger boost now. Google Venture poured $258 million into Uber last year, making the update to the mobile app mutually beneficial.
You do have to have the Uber app installed, though. If you do you can click on the Uber option in Maps and it'll take you straight to the app to hail a ride. The immediate benefit is clear, but some in the tech world are taking this as a sign that self-driving Uber cabs will arrive in the (distant) future.
That, of course, would be a game-changer. Even more so than Uber currently is. If you believe projections that all cars will be autonomous by 2050, it's only a matter of time.
