The Philadelphia 76ers have fired Doc Rivers as head coach, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports.
The firing comes after the 76ers lost to the Boston Celtics in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, eliminating them from the postseason despite the fact that they had a 3-2 lead in the series.
Rivers led the 76ers for three seasons and took the team to the postseason all three years, but they failed to make it to a Conference Finals under his stewardship. It became pretty clear that the Sixers were likely going to make a change after this latest disappointment.
Despite the loss, Joel Embiid defended his coach in postgame presser.
"I think he has done a fantastic job," Embiid said. "We have gotten better over the years ... he has been a great leader for all of us."
Even with that ringing endorsement, it wasn't enough to save Doc, who should have no problem finding another NBA coaching gig sooner rather than later.
