Though it’s been one month since she and John Cena ended their six-year relationship, Nikki Bella says she remains hopeful about their future together.
The WWE/reality TV star spoke about her highly publicized breakup with Cena during Wednesday’s episode of TheToday Show. The interviewed aired on the heels of Cena’s own Today Show appearance, in which he professed his love for Nikki and claimed he still wanted to marry her. Nikki said it was a moment that took her by surprise.
“I was so shocked. I literally was in the middle of the red carpet for the NBCUniversal upfronts and got the breaking news,” Nikki said alongside her twin sister, Brie Bella. “I mean, John—and you guys know this—he is absolutely an amazing man, such a sweetheart, and I truly love him so much. He’s my best friend.”
Nikki and Cena, who were expected to tie the knot earlier this month, called off their engagement in mid-April. The Total Bellas star suggested she began having doubts about the relationship shortly before the big day; however, Nikki insists she's still open to marriage ... when the time is right.
“I think a lot of us that go through the wedding planning process, I think we kind of have to face—and get forced to face—all of these issues that we have just hiding deep down inside,” she told Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. “I just know that a healthy me will be a healthy us. I do have hope for our future, but I know right now I need to work on me. Before I do say those vows and walk down that aisle, I just don’t want to be hesitant. I don’t want to be regretful […] I definitely have hope. I really do.”
