Russell Westbrook has done a lot of really amazing things during the 2016-17 NBA season. He’s currently averaging 31.2 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 10.4 assists and is well on his way to becoming the first player in more than 50 years to average a triple-double over the course of an entire year. But on Wednesday night, the MVP candidate may have pulled off his greatest accomplishment yet during the Thunder’s 122-97 win over the 76ers.
Westbrook recorded yet another triple-double during Oklahoma City’s game against Philadelphia. And while that in and of itself wasn’t all that impressive when you consider everything else Westbrook has done in recent months, it’s how he did it that was incredible. Westbrook recorded 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 14 assists in 28 minutes of action while shooting 6-for-6 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. It made him the first player in NBA history to record a triple-double without missing a field goal or free throw.
Immediately after the game, Westbrook was asked to comment on his historic feat, and he didn’t even seem to realize what he had accomplished. But he had a pretty epic response to it:
A short time later, he was asked to talk about his extremely efficient night again, and despite doing what he did, he found a way to downplay it with a pretty ho-hum explanation.
"Just play, honestly," he said. "Just trying to take my time. Watched some film and just trying to pick my spots better. Find ways to get my teammates involved throughout the game. Just happy to win."
