Floyd Mayweather isn’t as rich as most of the people who own NBA teams, but he does have a few dollars stashed away in the bank. He’s also one of the only people in the world who could wake up tomorrow and basically print $100-plus million by booking one day of work. So at some point in the near future, Mayweather is interested in buying at least a part of an NBA team.
During a press conference for the Adrien Broner/Ashley Theophane fight yesterday, Mayweather revealed that he has his sights set on an NBA ownership stake. He realizes that, in order to be an NBA owner, he would need to give up sports gambling. But he sounds like he’s ready to do it.
“You guys know I like to bet on sports,” he said, “but I’m looking forward to stepping back from betting on sports now. I’m looking forward to probably getting into ownership of an NBA team.”
This isn’t the first time Mayweather has talked about owning an NBA team. He briefly thought about trying to convince some of his richest friends to help him buy the Clippers back in 2014. And while he mentioned that he doesn't have an interest in buying any particular team, he has shown up at back-to-back Wizards games, including a game against the 76ers last night, so maybe he's already scouting an investment opportunity in Washington D.C.?
