Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez has issued a stern warning to Argentina legend Lionel Messi, who he accused of dishonoring his country at the 2022 World Cup.

Canelo’s warning came after Messi helped Argentina keep their World Cup hopes alive on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Mexico. Following the game, a video circulated on social media in which Messi, while celebrating in the locker room with his teammates, appeared to kick a Mexico shirt that was on the floor.

Alvarez took to Twitter on Sunday to seemingly threaten Messi for disrespecting his homeland.

“Did you see Messi cleaning the floor with our shirt and flag????” Canelo tweeted. “He better pray to God that I don’t find him!! Just like I respect Argentina, he has to respect Mexico!”

“I’m not talking about the country as a whole, just about the bullshit that Messi pulled,” he added.

It didn’t take long before one of Messi’s former teammates came to his defense, as Sergio Aguero responded to Alvarez in an effort to try and clear things up.

“Mr. Canelo, don’t look for excuses or problems, surely you don’t know about football and what happens in a changing room,” Aguero tweeted. “The shirts are always on the floor after games have finished due to sweat and then if you look properly, he makes the movement to remove his boot and accidentally hits it.”
