The Boston Celtics finished another disappointing game, when they lost to the New York Knicks on Wednesday night, but judging on what Kyrie Irving had to say following the game, the attention will sit squarely on what his controversial comments rather than how he and his team played. As Mass Live reported, Irving was wished a happy Thanksgiving by a reporter, to which he politely thanked them, before adding, "Fuck Thanksgiving."
Irving later confirmed the comments with NBC Sports, explaining that he's understandably opposed to the holiday due to his Native American heritage. Following the reports of his comments, he apologized on Twitter, "I spoke w/ frustration after last nights game and spoke words that shouldn't be in a professional setting no matter what. Meant no disrespect to the Holiday and those who celebrate it respectfully. I'm grateful for the time we all can share with our families. We are always ONE."
Recently, Irving went through a Sioux naming ritual in South Dakota, getting more in touch with his heritage and receiving the name Little Mountain. He also hasn't been shy about supporting the #NoDAPL protestors at Standing Rock.
As CBS Sports points out, Irving's grandmother was a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, but his mother was adopted out of the tribe when young.
