Bill Belichick Roasts Reporter After Question About Adding Free Agents

The New England Patriots may have fallen in February's Super Bowl, but they still enter the 2018-19 season as the favorite to win the title—and they probably will be favored as long as Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are around.

The New England Patriots may have fallen in February's Super Bowl, but they still enter the 2018-19 season as the favorite to win the title—and they probably will be favored as long as Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are around. The Patriots are always looking to improve, however, and it's reasonable to expect they'll add a free agent or two after rosters shrink down to 53 players by the Sept. 1 deadline.

That's an obvious prediction—so don't ask Belichick about it. During the coach's press conference Tuesday morning, a reporter asked whether the team was paying attention to which players could hit the market and potentially join the defending AFC champs. Belichick responded with an odd little jab.

Bill Belichick said the Patriots obviously are monitoring all the other teams for potential players to add: "What do you think we're doing? We're in camp. We don't have watermelon rolls and badminton contests and all that."

His response begged the question: what are watermelon rolls? The internet, of course, had an answer: they're a dessert sold by Friendly's.

Whoa ... Grew up going to the Sudbury Friendly's (RIP) ... How'd I not know about this? I have failed. https://t.co/6hRUEOMy4y

Belichick is known for his terse interactions with the media. Things got testy earlier this summer, for example, when a reporter pressed Belichick about benching star corner Malcolm Butler in the Super Bowl.

After wrapping up the preseason with a Thursday game against the Giants, the Pats will commence their regular season Sunday, Sept. 9, against Houston. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
