According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the San Francisco 49ers traded tight end Vernon Davis to the Denver Broncos.
The report comes just hours after 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula told the media that the organization was "evaluating anyone." It's an approach which shouldn't come as a shock for a 2-6 team that looks to be headed nowhere fast and on the road to rebuilding. The move also comes a little over a week after Davis expressed his frustrations with starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick, causing a potential divide in the Niners' locker room.
As for the Broncos, the team needed another receiving threat for Peyton Manning. After Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, the offensive talent level on the Denver passing game takes a sizable dropoff. Davis may be able to fill the void left by Julius Thomas, after both Virgil Green and Owen Daniels failed to rise to the occasion.
Prior to Sunday night's win over the Green Bay Packers, Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak stressed an importance in getting his tight ends more involved on offense. Green and Daniels combined for 105 yards on six catches. While these are solid numbers, both guys don't come close to matching Vernon's potential. At 31, Davis may not have much left in the tank, but he could still potentially outperform both TEs, as long as he stays healthy.
