Paris Saint Germain’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic is nothing if not outspoken. After calling Chelsea players “babies” last week after being sent off in the Champions League, he’s now insulted the entire nation of France.
Following PSG’s shock 3-2 defeat to Bordeaux on Sunday, Zlatan was filmed wilin’ out after the game, calling France a “shit country”. The footage shows a vexed Zlatan storming off the pitch, ranting “In 15 years I’ve never seen a good referee in this shit country. It doesn’t even deserve PSG in this country.”
Here's the video:
Understandably the French weren’t very happy about this. Ibrahimovic quickly released a statement through PSG’s official website, playing down the outburst.
"I want to clarify that my words tonight were not directed against France or French people. I was speaking purely in terms of football. I lost the game, I accept that, but I can't accept it when the referee doesn't follow the rules. It is not the first time and I'm tired of it. I would like to apologise if anybody was offended or interpreted my words the wrong way."
That apology hasn’t been enough for some people. Notorious far-right politician, and leader of French National Front Marine Le Pen has now demanded that Ibrahimovic leave the country. "Those who consider that France is a shit country can leave it," she told French radio station France Info. The French Sports Minister Patrick Jenner also called Zlatan’s comments “insulting,” but still welcomed his apology.
