Is fantasy football ruining real football?

Richard Sherman thinks so.

In an interview tonight on Sunday Night Football, Sherman told NBC’s Josh Elliott that all the illegal contact calls this preseason were due to the NFL feeling the pressure from advertisers and sponsors. “When the fantasy football numbers need to be what they need to be, then the league needs to do what it needs to do to get it done,” Sherman said. “This is a money-driven league, so whatever sells the tickets is gonna sell the tickets.”

It’s no secret that scoring has been on a steady increase over the last decade, with last season once again setting a record for average points per game in the modern era. It seems a little farfetched that a meaningless diversion like fantasy football could impact the policies of what happens on the field, but perhaps the only thing more foolish would be to dismiss it outright.

So, could there be some merit to what Sherman’s saying? Let us know what you think.
