We're still waiting on the auto-lacing 2016 Nike MAG, but now we're learning that the Swoosh has plans to bring auto-lacing tech to the public before the end of the year.
Featured at today's Nike Innovation event is the HyperAdapt 1.0, a performance training sneaker that makes use of auto-lacing, or as Nike calls it, adaptive lacing, technology. The idea here is that the wearer will be able to adjust and fine-tune the fit of the HyperAdapt to their specific preference with a function similar to that seen on the MAG.
"When you step in, your heel will hit a sensor and the system will automatically tighten. Then there are two buttons on the side to tighten and loosen. You can adjust it until it’s perfect," Nike Senior Innovator Tiffany Beers said.
Not only is the technology impressive in terms of innovation, but it's also practical. Famed designer Tinker Hatfield pointed out that adaptive lacing will eliminate common athlete annoyances like pressure from tight laces or heel slippage from loose knots. "That’s an important step, because feet undergo an incredible amount of stress during competition," Hatfield said.
The HyperAdapt 1.0 will debut this holiday season in three colorways, which you can preview below.
