There are a lot of Joker films in the works. Warner Bros. is slated to release another Suicide Squad film along with a spinoff with Joker and Harley Quinn, possibly with Jared Leto and Margot Robbie reprising their roles. There's another Joker/Harley Quinn in the works by way of This Is Us' Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. And then there's a Joker origin film that's set to star Joaquin Phoenix as the famed Batman villain.
But Phoenix isn't pressed about fans' thoughts about the upcoming Todd Phillips–directed film or how he's going to approach the character. "I could care less," he told IndieWire. "I don’t really think that much about what people think. Who cares, who cares? My approach to every movie is the same. What I’m interested in is the filmmaker and the idea of the character."
Phoenix, who recently said the role "scares the fucking shit out of [him]," went on to explain he's not too picky when it comes to picking films to star in. "If there’s something that feels unique, then I don’t really care what genre it is, what budget it is," he told IndieWire. "Those things aren’t important." Instead, his interest is "examining people." He further explained: "Some of it is really fucking simple. It’s chemistry, it’s like what you look for in a lover. You know it when it happens."
Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz are also in talks to join the film. In the meantime, Phoenix has a slew of other projects on the way including a Bible adaptation, Mary Magdalene, the thriller You Were Never Really Here, and a black-comedy Western The Sisters Brothers. The latter film arrives in theaters on Sept. 19.
